Product merchandising a great potential of Bollywood

January 31, 2007 By: admin Category: Bollywood, Hollywood

Bollywood is considered to be the second largest film industry in the world and in terms of film released per year, Bollywood is far ahead than Bollywood. However, when it comes to doing business Hollywood is always far ahead of Bollywood. Product endorsement and movie merchandise is a big business in USA but not in India. The good thing is that the film producers are now understanding the potential of product merchandising. Cinematical reports:

Indian cinema isn’t like US cinema … at least not yet. In 2003, the cinematically prolific India had close to double the feature films of the US — 877 -vs- 473. Is it a big, sacred cash cow? It might not seem so with movie tickets costing less than half of one US dollar, but last year the industry raked in over a billion dollars — imagine the profits if they paid what we do! While the sheer size of the industry makes the North America’s look teeny, they can’t come close to the power of the movie merchandise business — at least not yet.

Derek Bose, the author of Brand Bollywood: A New Entertainment Order told Reuters that “Bollywood’s top producers and studios have woken up to the possibility of earning money other than from the box office which can not remain their only revenue source.” Yes, they’ve woken up and smelled the possibilities. The industry has embraced the idea of media convergence, and are delighting in multi-platform branding. Last year, Krrish, a huge Bollywood sci-fi hit, came out with everything from action dolls to costumes and stationary.

Hollywood is one of the oldest and most reputed film industries in the world. No wonder what Hollywood thinks today the rest of the world thinks tomorrow. However, Indian cinema industry is not negligible any more. Aside from India Hindi movies are very popular in Middle East, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and in many other countries in the world. Along with this there is the increasing number of audience in Europe and America. India movie industry is at its zenith. This is the best time to do business.

Kate Bosworth vs Priyanka Chopra: Lois Lanes of Hollywood and Bollywoo

December 15, 2006 By: admin Category: Bollywood, Hollywood, Priyanka Chopra

It won’t be an exaggeration to say that Lois Lane has as many fans as superman has. Superman is crazy for her and the readers and viewers admire her too. In the movie, Superman Returns, Kate Bosworth played the role of Lois Lane and won the heart of not only Superman but many of us. She is expected to play the role of Lois Lane in the next episode of Superman too. To the western people, kate Bosworth is so familiar that I need not introduce her to them.

On the other hand, Priyanka Chopra is a household name among Bollywood fans. 2006 was a great year for her and she acted as lover of Krrish, the Indian superhero in the film ‘Krrish’. Priyanka Chopra feels that she is Indian Lois Lane. IHT reported:

Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra says she is India’s answer to Lois Lane, Superman’s great love.

Chopra played the female lead in India’s first superhero film, “Krrish,” which was among this year’s blockbusters.

Chopra told The Times of India that her popularity among children has soared since the release of “Krrish”.

“You could say I am India’s answer to Lois Lane,” she was quoted as saying.

Chopra was voted the “most amazing actress” by Indian children participating in a poll by the Pogo television channel. Hrithik Roshan, who played the superhero in “Krrish,” bagged the award for the “most amazing actor.”

By the way, do you know that Priyanka won Miss World 2000. She is beautiful- no doubt about that but is she a skilled actor? To tell you the truth, she is not admired as a great actor in India. Most of her films failed to attract the common people as well the film critics. She is yet to be considered as a very glamorous or very skilled actress. So, I got surprised that she claimed herself to be India’s answer to Lois Lane. In fact, about her acting career Wikipedia’s entry about her mentions:

After winning the Miss World title, Priyanka became an actress. She first acted in a Tamil film Thamizhan (2002) and since then has acted in many Bollywood films. Her first Hindi film was the big budget The Hero: Love Story of a Spy (2003) which was a flop. She became more known from her next film Andaaz (2003) which was a hit, for which she won her first Filmfare Award. Coincidentally, her co-star in that movie was her Miss India compatriot, Lara Dutta.

She then acted in a series of flops until Mujhse Shaadi Karogi in (2004) which was her second hit. She followed it up with Aitraaz, a Hindi remake of the Demi Moore-starrer Disclosure which was yet another box office success. In the same year, she particiated in a world tour with Bollywood’s leading stars, including Shahrukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Saif Ali Khan, Preity Zinta and Arjun Rampal.[2]

In 2005, she had many releases, though most did moderately at the box office. In 2006, she worked in two of the most successful films of the year – Krrish and Don – The Chase Begins Again.

Both in Krrish and Don she got overshadowed by the two male actors.

On the other hand, Kate Bosworth is a skilled actress with an illustrious background. She had to fight with many actresses to get selected to play the role of Lois Lane in Superman Returns. She made her film debut in The Horse Whisperer (1998). In that movie, she had a small role but she worked hard and slowly worked her way through Hollywood. Superman Returns has brought stardom for her and she is a brilliant actress.

Although this is a blog about Bollywood, I think that Kate Bosworth is way ahead than Priyanka Chopra. Priyanka lacks the acting talent for becoming Lois Lane.

What do you think?
